A new law took effect on July 1, 2012 that will require all ATVs and UTVs riding in public areas throughout the state of Wisconsin to have an atv license plate. Previously all ATVs and UTVs driving on public lands were only required to have decals showing registration that had to be renewed every two years through the DNR in the state of Wisconsin.
Now, four-wheel off-road riders must purchase atv license plate kits, or make their own atv license plate, with the license plate number matching the number issued on the DNR sticker. If riders choose to make their own atv license plate, the only other requirement is the size, which is 4 inches by 7 ½ inches.
An inconvenience for some, but the atv license plate kits can be purchased for around $15.00 at most ATV dealers, that is probably much less expensive then the ticket that would be issued for a missing plate.
