BRP has initiated a recall in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission for specific years and models of the Can-Am Commander due to the potential loss of steering. The Can-Am Commander is a sporty, two-seater, side-by-side utility vehicle designed for work and fun.
Although there have not been any reported injuries from the potential steering hazard on the Can-Am Commander, there have been three reports of steering loss that resulted in the recall of approximately 3400 vehicles.
The Can-Am Commander Recalled Models
For the 2011 model year, the following models are included in the recall:
Commander 800
Commander 1000
Commander XT 800R
Commander X 1000
For the 2012 model year, the following models are included in the recall:
Commander 800
Commander 1000
Commander XT 800
Commander X 1000
Commander Limited 1000
Consumers who own the Can-Am Commander are being advised stop using the utility vehicle and contact their local BRP dealer to schedule a free inspection and repair if necessary. The dealer will inspect the assembly of the steering column to the rack and pinion; original improper assembly has been determined to be the cause of steering loss. Registered owners of the affected models have been notified directly by BRP, but if consumers purchased a used Can-Am Commander and did not notify BRP of new ownership, they should contact BRP directly so the owner information can be updated. New owner information is imperative to ensure consumers are notified of any recalls.
The Can-Am Commander is available in several different model packages, but features of all the models that appeal to consumers include the generously high ground clearance, the independent suspension, a dual-level cargo box and cockpit storage, and a 1500-lb. towing capacity.
