Yamaha R1 Recall: Yamaha R1 Overheating Problem

Yamaha Motor Corporation is recalling nearly 24,000 of their popular R1 sportbikes and Super Tenere adventure touring models. The recall is a result of an overheating problem in the headlight. Of the 24,000 motorcycles being recalled; roughly 19,000 are the YZF-R1 models and 4,700 are the Super Tenere models.

The Yamaha YZF-R1 recall models were manufactured between October of 2008 and August of 2013. The model year on the bike will be from 2009 through 2013.

The Yamaha Super Tenere recall models were manufactured from October of 2011 through August of 2013 and are model years 2012 and 2013.

The headlight socket in both of these models may generate enough heat to cause the bulb connection to expand.  Should the bulb connection expand, an arcing in the headlight bulb socket can cause the bulb to overheat, melt and then the headlight will malfunction, this is basically the Yamaha R1 overheating problem

Loss of the headlight on a motorcycle can reduce the driver’s ability to see as well as reduce the visibility of the motorcycle to other motorists.  Either scenario increases a risk of a crash leading to a possibility of injury or death.

Owners of the affected motorcycles will be contacted by Yamaha beginning in February of 2014.  Motorcycles included in the recall will have the headlight socket replaced free of charge.
